Congratulations & Welcome to GW!

Thank you for choosing us! It's official! You are one of the newest members of our George Washington University community. It is time to begin one of the most exciting and transformational moments of your life—a journey full of independence, friendships, and self-discovery.

By now you know how special the GW community is, and it's true! You are joining the ranks of more than 300,000 distinguished alumni in over 150 countries with careers that span every industry, and they started exactly where you are now—as a high school student who chose GW as the "Next Stop" on their journey.

As you participate in proms and senior weeks, complete final papers and exams, and assemble for graduation ceremonies and celebrations, we—the New Student Orientation (NSO) team—will be your guides this summer and into the first couple of weeks of school as you prepare for your college transition. Our roles are to help orient, connect, and support you, your families, and all of our undergraduate students who will be attending GW for the first time in fall 2022.

We Interrupt This Welcome For a Very Important Message:

The way that GW has communicated with you up until this point has been through your personal email account, ie: the one you provided during the admissions process. As a GW student you need your GW email and UserID to register for orientation, apply for housing, register for classes and much more.

The most important action you need to complete today–if you haven't already–is CLAIM your UserID and password to create your GW email. Note: The UserID form system will be offline between May 22 - May 30 and you will not be able to claim a UserID and GW email during that time.

CLAIM YOUR GW EMAIL - NOW!

Starting Monday, May 9, the university will prioritize sending emails to GW email accounts and we don't want you to miss out on important Checklist and Action Items that you need to complete this summer using your GW UserID and/or GW Email. If you do receive an email to your personal email account this means you have not set-up your GW UserID and email yet and may be missing out on important GW updates.

What's Next in Your Journey to GW?

Starting today, Next Stop, GW! will be the main way that our team and our colleagues from other offices around campus will communicate with you. Next Stop, GW!: Orientation Edition will be in your inbox at the beginning of each month in June, July and August. This monthly newsletter will provide action items to complete, community updates, and ways to connect with your peers and GW via social media. >> Check out your first set of action items below.

And, next week, Next Stop, GW!: Campus Housing will be sent to your GW inbox as we know you are eager to learn more about how to register for housing.

We are so proud of you for making it this far in your journey. We can't wait to get to know you online this summer and in-person the week of August 20.

Tasks to Complete in May:

  • CLAIM Your UserID to Create Your GW Email. You need your GW email to search for a roommate, apply for housing, register for classes, and more. Claim it by Friday, May 6 to be on schedule to participate in the housing application process.
  • REGISTER for First-Year Fall OrientationThis is the only form you will need to complete to register for both virtual and in-person sessions. We start meeting online later this month and will be in-person Aug. 22 - 28.
  • COMPLETE the GW First Year Academic Interest SurveyThe survey takes 5 minutes. Results of this survey will be used to assist in virtual advising sessions and connect you to various academic resources.
  • COMPLETE Sections 1 & 2: Academic Advising & Class Registration in your admitted students portalThese sections will help you prepare for your first-year group advising webinar that takes place before class registration. We'll send you an email with the link and we'll post the link to our website's Before You Arrive page.
  • SIGN-UP for a date/time to register for your fall courses*. Your initial meeting with your academic advisor will be a virtual session. Exception: first-year students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science are pre-registered for fall courses and you will not have a virtual session w/an advisor. See the online orientation module for more details.
  • REGISTER with Disability Support ServicesThis is not required for all students. This registration is for students who are seeking additional support in the classroom or to accommodate a disability for your classes or living on campus.
  • CONSIDER Your Roommate/s.
  • Some of you may have already identified the person/s you want to live with next year and that's great! Others may need some help finding a roommate. "My College Roomie" is an optional service that Campus Living & Residential Education (ie: the office that oversees on-campus housing) uses to help students create a profile and locate others with similar interests/living habits.
    • Campus Living & Residential Education (CLRE) will send information about "My College Roomie" to your GW email in the next couple of days so you can get a jump on making connections. If you don't claim your GW email by Friday, CLRE will send the roommate profiles on a rolling basis as you claim your GW email.
  • REGISTER to Live On-Campus in our Residence Halls.
    • Registration opens the week of May 16. You will receive more details about the housing process the week of May 9 from Campus Living and Residential Education in the Next Stop, GW: Campus Housing Edition.
    • For planning purposes: Move-in for first-year students is Aug. 20 - 22. You will be able to choose your move-in day in mid-June after the housing registration process is complete. We recommend that you wait to book travel until after you have a confirmed move-in day and 4-hour timeslot.
  • VIEW The Buff & Blue Book. This comprehensive student guide to GW will be available the week of May 9 as a PDF download on our Orientation website.

HINT: Want to get ahead? The entire first-year checklist is in your admitted student portal.

PRO TIP: Write down your login information to the portal and keep it in a safe place - this is different from your UserID. You will use both often this summer.
