Next Steps for First-Year Students

First-Year Checklist

You did it, you committed to GW! Here is what you need to do next - upon deposit and over the summer months before arriving for move-in and Orientation.

After you make your deposit:

  • Bookmark your student portal and login to review and complete the following tasks located in Next Steps:
    • Claim your netID and password (create your GW email), and get in the habit of checking that email throughout the summer
      • All official communication will be sent to students' GW email often
    • Send your final high school transcript and, if applicable, AP or IB scores, to GW Undergraduate Admissions (email [email protected] for questions). If you are planning to defer, please contact [email protected].
    • Register for First-Year Fall Orientation. Once registered for Orientation, scroll down in your admissions portal to register for a class registration date and time.
    • Fill out the GW First Year Academic Interest Survey. Results from this quick 5-minute survey will be used to assist your advisor during virtual advising sessions and will allow them to connect you to various academic resources.

Over the Summer (May - August):

  • Complete the Online Orientation module (Link will go live May 10th). In May and June, you will complete section 1 & 2 prior to signing up and attending a virtual advising webinar. We will remind you via email to complete other sections throughout the summer.
  •  If you are a student with a documented disability, register with Disability Support Services at disabilitysupport.gwu.edu. It is best to provide documentation as soon as possible to avoid delays in the implementation of accommodations. Accommodations are not retroactive. Submit documentation and schedule a meeting with a DSS representative early to complete the registration process.
  • Submit a photo for your GWorld card (GW student ID). An email will be sent to you from the GWorld Card Office.
  • Submit mandatory health immunization form to the Colonial Health Center patient portal by August 1, 2021.
  • Create a profile and login to GW Engage to browse over 500+ student organizations and to find upcoming events.
  • Complete online modules & trainings. All new students are required to complete AlcoholEdu for College Students, Sexual Harassment Prevention Training and Workshops - Title IX, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Online Educational Module. More details can be found in this book and via email later this summer.
  • Regularly check your GW email - this will be our primary way of communicating with you throughout the summer.
