Next Stop, GW: Your Home at GW logo

Hi there!

We know others may have already said it, but we also want to say…Welcome to GW!

We are excited to have you join our GW community in January. We know a part of your collegiate journey may be living on-campus in our residence halls, where almost 7,000 undergraduate students live every year. We are GW’s Campus Living & Residential Education team and we are the team who will help you enjoy your on-campus living experience. Today, we are writing to you about what it’s like to live in GW’s residence halls. Our message includes important details regarding requirements to live on campus, information about our residence halls, how to register for housing, and more.

TIP! We encourage you to share and discuss this information with your families! We have a hunch that your families will be interested in where you will be living and what you will be eating when you get to campus.

Spring 2024: On-Campus Living Requirements

Our undergraduate students are required to adhere to GW’s two-year residency requirement, which means first- and second-year students are required to live on-campus in a GW residence hall unless, in a limited number of circumstances, a student meets specific criteria to receive an exemption to live off-campus.

As you proceed through the housing registration process, please note that Your Housing Class Year is: 2027.

  • For your awareness, we use your expected 4-year graduation year (not the number of academic credits earned to date) to determine your housing class year.
  • As noted, Class of 2027 students are required to live on-campus during the Spring 2024 semester.

Getting to Know Our Spring 2024 Residential Communities

You may be wondering: where will I live for the spring semester?

At GW, most residence halls are designated as first-year or upper-class (2nd-, 3rd-, or 4th-year undergraduate students) communities. As we identify available rooms in our halls for our incoming first-time students arriving this spring, you are most likely to be assigned to live in a first-year hall or, if needed because of room availability, an upper-class hall.

If assigned to a room in a first-year residence hall on either the Mount Vernon or Foggy Bottom campuses, you’ll live with students who are also in their first-year of college at GW.

In the rare case that you are assigned to a room in an upper-class residence hall on the Foggy Bottom campus, we hope to pair you up in a room with at least one other new student who is also experiencing GW for the first time in the spring semester. You may have a suitemate or two who are in a different class year, and they can be great resources to help acclimate you to life at GW.

Registering for Spring 2024 Housing

Now comes the time to register for housing! There is a portal affiliated with your GW UserID to complete the housing forms required. The Campus Living eServices portal is that place!

To register for on-campus housing:

  1. Go to your Campus Living eServices Portal and click on the “Register for Spring 2024 Housing ” button.
  2. Complete a set of questions regarding your personal living preferences, which helps us assign you to a room with peers who have similar living styles as you. Start thinking about your sleep schedule, study habits, or any other key living factors that may help you succeed with roommates while at GW.
  3. If you have a preferred roommate who is a first-year student living on-campus this fall and you know that they will have a vacant spot in their room for spring 2024, we are happy to accommodate your request to live with them. Please indicate your preferred roommate in your eServices Portal when completing the registration form. We will need to confirm that the vacancy officially exists before we can confirm that we will assign you to that specific room. You will also be able to indicate specific people you would like to live with, should you have a friend who is also registering for spring housing.
  4. You will indicate your preference for room size, among 2-person, 3-person, and 4-person rooms. Because of limited spring room availability, we are unable to take requests for single rooms or ranked preferences of buildings. You will be able to indicate a preference for room cost, given the likelihood that some new spring students may be assigned to live in upper-class residence halls.
  5. If you do not indicate any preferred roommates via your eServices Portal or via email, you will be randomly assigned to a room with a vacant space with roommates.
  6. In early-to-mid December you’ll be assigned to your spring 2024 housing. At that time we will preview your move-in process. Move-in for spring 2024 is Friday, Jan. 12, and Saturday, Jan. 13 (9 a.m. both days). Reminder, in-person orientation is Sunday, Jan. 14.
