Hello students,

My name is Claire Hardiman and I am an Orientation Peer Advisor. I am a rising third-year student majoring in International Affairs, and I’m from Albany, New York. This month, I’ll be sharing with you some tips for self-care and well-being as a GW student.

In the transition back to life on campus, it may be easy to get overwhelmed with your workload. I find it helpful to plan my week ahead of time to avoid things piling up! I use Google Calendar, but there are a bunch of great calendar apps. I recommend saving space in your week to relax and be kind to yourself - this could include reading, painting (I LOVE paint-by-numbers kits), making spotify playlists, or anything else you enjoy.

Spending time with friends exploring the D.C. area is another good way to unwind, and something that we’ve been missing this year. Getting outside, browsing a museum, and going for a walk are things that help me escape from the stress of school and feel connected to our D.C. community. It’s important to save space for alone time to balance out a busy schedule. This can be as simple as sitting at the Mall and reading a book! Self care is so important, and there are many resources at GW to ensure you are feeling well. Although some stress is inevitable in this transition, know that you are surrounded by an amazing community that wants to see you succeed!

Have a wonderful summer!

Program Dates: August 25-28

We're excited to welcome you to campus! Your in-person Orientation experience will be more like a 'choose your own adventure' over the course of a few days, where you can pick and choose from options provided. Some events include:

  • Excursions around D.C.
  • Transfer student social
  • GW Late Night events
  • Games and food on the National Mall

All events are geared toward acclimating you to campus (yes, we'll be offering campus tours!) and the city, all while getting to know your fellow classmates (and new transfers) IRL.

Your Orientation Week wraps up with First Night, a kick off to the school year with fellow GW students!

You will receive more details, including links to sign-up for events in August. We'll also update our website with a transfer schedule of events prior to move-in.

Did you hear the news?

GW is committed to eliminating single-use plastics! The plan will apply to everything, from vending machines and retail dining partners to events and more. So what does this actually mean for you? For starters, we hope you'll join us in reducing your own single-use plastics while at GW by using a reusable water bottle at the water filling stations, or keeping a reusable straw in your backpack for your iced coffee beverages. If you're living on-campus, you can also start having conversations with your roommates now about sustainability lifestyle choices for your residence hall. ♻️

COVID-19 Update

This fall, we will be excited to offer a comprehensive on-campus experience for our community. Our residence halls, classrooms, libraries, offices and other spaces will be safe and ready for our community members to occupy at full capacity -- in-person. Within the last two weeks GW lifted the mask requirement for all indoor spaces for those who are fully vaccinated, so make sure you make a plan to get vaccinated before you join us in person and on campus this fall! Aug. 1 -- Deadline to upload your COVID-19 vaccination record to the medical portal.
